HSE Online is launching a new course: Mechanisms of Climate Change. Students will learn not only how to critically assess information in media and differentiate scientific data from conspiracy theories, but also to independently conduct research into the climate system.

Open online courses from leading HSE University researchers are now available on the Russian platforms Lektorium and Edutoria and the Chinese platform XuetangX. HSE University’s online campus now offers more than 350 large-scale open online courses taken not only by HSE students and external attendees, but also by 15,000 online students from partner universities in Russia and other CIS countries.

HSE Online has won the 'Breakthrough of the Year' category in the Innovation Time Awards. Since 2011, these awards have recognised the best projects and practices pushing forward innovation in various fields. As part of the business programme forum, HSE Online shared how to grow from producing online courses to a whole online campus in the metaverse in just 10 years.

At HSE Online Day, online bachelor’s and master’s students learned more about the university environment and online social life, attended lectures on careers and skills from HSE and industry experts, and participated in a quiz by the Career Centre. The event took place on October 17.

HSE University has announced the results of its 2023/24 online admissions campaign. The university, which leads in CIS countries in terms of the number of online programmes (three bachelor’s and 18 master’s), has once again attracted the most students this year with a total of 1,750 admissions.

According to analytics from HSE University’s online campus, the demand for the Master of Data Science online Master’s programme has quadrupled, and the number of applicants doubled compared to last year (more than 250 students). Data science ranks first in demand among all HSE master’s degree programmes taught online.

HSE University’s Online Campus presents a new course—‘Islamic Finance: Theory and Practice in the 21^st Century’. Elmira Imamkulieva, creator of the course and Senior Lecturer at the School of International Regional Studies of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, explains how Islamic financing is more reliable than venture capital and why the green bonds common in the Arab world are the investment of the future.

A specialization with a focus on current industry cases is designed for practicing business analysts who seek to supplement their professional toolkit with the latest analytical methods.

The first two weeks of these video lectures are available to try, free of charge. At the moment, the demand for specializations which are integrated into bachelor's and master's degree programmes at the university, is growing rapidly — this is the next stage of the educational trajectory after short-term online courses.

HSE University is among the winners of the All-Russia Effective Education competition and was named Online University of the Year by the expert jury. The competition receives more than 150 applications a year from major education business players and HR industry leaders.

HSE University recently took part in EdCrunch Reload, Europe's largest conference on new technologies in education. The conference was held in Kazakhstan on November 23^rd and 24^th. Yulia Remezova, Director for eLearning, talked about the digital expertise of HSE University during a panel discussion entitled ‘Are the Giants Still Strong? The Path of Massive Online Universities in an Ever Changing Educational Context’.

At naval academy, Aleksandr Moshkov studied spherical trigonometry and built mathematical models of Earth’s surface. Now, the sea captain has dived into HSE University’s Economic Analysis programme. Aleksandr had the truly unique opportunity to study for the Master’s online without giving up his job at sea.

On October 26–28, the HSE University eLearning Office held the fifth U4Uonline intensive course for networking partner universities. HSE University has been creating large-scale open online courses since 2014. The university is also a co-founder of the Open Education national platform, includes online courses in its curricula, guides students through the digital learning process, and carries out quality monitoring and evaluation procedures.

Dmitry Perkov, a student on the ‘Master of Finance’ online programme, has developed his career from sales representative to regional manager in multinational corporations. He told HSE News Service how studying helped him to take a fresh look at his regular job and provided him with tools for managing his own investment portfolio.

The admissions campaign for the ‘Applied Social Psychology’ English-language programme of the Faculty of Social Sciences has started. From September 2022, this master’s programme, whose structure and curriculum align with those of social psychology programmes at European universities, will be delivered online.

HSE University and other leading Russian universities have signed a memorandum with VK and Skillbox to develop online learning and remote-education technologies in Russia. The signing took place at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Higher education has special value in the dynamically changing world of highly competitive labour markets. Employers care not only about diplomas, but also about the quality and relevance of the knowledge and skills gained from university. Online learning has become ‘the new normal’ in education—a minimum prerequisite. These issues were discussed by experts during the eLearning Stakeholders and Researchers Summit (eSTARS 2021) organised by HSE University in cooperation with Coursera.

The leaders of Russian and global EdTech companies met to discuss industry evolution, explain why demand for non-digital professions on platforms keeps growing, and speak about building online learning with a human touch. A panel discussion on ‘Trends in the Development of the Online Education Market’ was held as part of the eSTARS 2021 international conference organized by HSE University and Coursera.

eSTARS 2021, an international online conference organized by HSE University in partnership with Coursera, has taken place for the fourth time, attracting more than 1,300 participants from about 50 countries. Participants included education administrators, academic leaders, and representatives of leading EdTech companies. The conference featured about 100 research presentations.

This academic year, HSE University launched the first online master's programme ‘Master of Computer Vision’ supervised by Professor Andrey Savchenko. Alexander Rassadin, graduate of the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science (HSE Nizhny Novgorod) and active participant of many CV projects, is delivering the course ‘Deep Learning for Computer Vision’ as part of the curriculum for this new programme. Alexander told us how he once wrote an algorithm for robot movement, the moment he realized what his dream job was and why analyzing sports games is more interesting than predicting a tsunami.
