To ensure the quality and reliability of assessment in online learning, the National Research University Higher School of Economics uses technology proctoring (to proctor — to control the process of examination). A special unit, the Proctor Center, administers all the processes of online exams. It also provides training and coordination of proctors from the staff of faculties. The technological partner is the company «Examus», applications of which are used to organize the exams. The university uses several types of proctoring.
Is usually used in written exams (tests). The exam is monitored online in real time by a third-party proctor, an «Examus» employee. His or her task is to monitor the conformity with the conditions of the assessment. Proctor conducts identification of the student’s identity (ID document check), controls observance of the exam procedure,he or she can comment on the student’s actions in a special chat (in writing). Two video streams are recorded: from the student’s webcam and student’s computer desktop. The proctor can interrupt the exam by marking it as «unreliable» if the situations indicated in his instructions arise: for example, the student cheats and does not react to the proctor’s comments in the chat. One proctor may accompany 6 students in an exam at the same time. This is the most precise and most resource-intensive type of proctoring.
Functionally fully complies with the previous type of proctoring, but the proctors are pre-trained employees of the faculties of the National Research University Higher School of Economics. In this format, all admission exams are held online, because they must be accepted by members of the admissions committee. Technically one proctor can observe 6 students at a time while performing the written part (test).
Identification of the person as well as the whole course of the exam is provided by the software, the system automatically tracks some prohibited actions, such as absence of the student in the video frame, second person in the frame, conversation during the exam, connection of the second monitor, and marks the video of the related exam as unreliable, but the exam is not interrupted. Unfortunately, the system may make mistakes, so it is necessary to double-check the video with the detected violations. During the exam video is recorded from the student’s webcam and computer desktop, which is then checked by a faculty member of the HSE National Research University who either confirms that the student has violated the exam procedure or recognizes the exam as passed. The least resource-intensive type of proctoring, because it does not require the approval of proctors' schedules and assumes selective rather than complete recheck of video recordings.
