Coursera is one of the more popular and high-quality global projects in online education, which operates in partnership with leading academic institutions around the world. The platform’s audience includes around 30 million learners, while its Russian-speaking demographic is in the Top-5 in terms of learner groups. HSE and Coursera started working together in 2013. Since that time, HSE has been among the four leading world universities in terms of total MOOCs hosted on Coursera.
HSE Online has developed and successfully launched 90 courses through the Coursera platform. In February 2016, HSE started up three specializations on this platform: ‘Financial Instruments for Private Investors’, ‘Corporate Finance and Company Value’, and (in conjunction with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD)) ‘Data Structures and Algorithms’. Furthermore, in October 2017, three more specializations were launched: ‘Introduction to Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science’ (in conjunction with UCSD and in partnership with Yandex), ‘Advanced Machine Learning’ (in partnership with Yandex) and ‘Fundamentals of Digital Marketing’ (in conjunction with Google). Each of these specializations includes several courses (from four to seven courses), as well as a hands-on final project, which is based on the knowledge learners get from all courses of their given specialization.
Among its offerings, HSE Online has created courses on theoretical and applied economics, finance, applied mathematics, data science, psychology, and the humanities. All of these courses have been developed and are coordinated by HSE’s leading teachers and academic staff. The 90 MOOCs now available from HSE Online have attracted around 2 million students from 149 countries, including Russia, the USA, India, Ukraine, the UK, China, Germany, Canada, France and Egypt. The most popular HSE course on Coursera is ‘Algorithmic Toolbox’, the first course of the ‘Data Structures and Algorithms’ specialization, for which around 120,000 learners have registered to date.
Since 2018, the majority of HSE Online courses have been offered in a new format on the Coursera platform. This way, learners can take part in a course at any time that is convenient for them. Furthermore, learners have the option of signing up for a paid track, whereby they can get access to all assignments and tests. After successfully completing them, students can receive a certificate.
